# 3D Secure and SCA

## About 3D Secure and SCA[](#about "Direct link to About 3D Secure and SCA")

[3D Secure](https://monei.com/blog/what-is-3d-secure-and-its-advantages-for-e-commerce/) (3DS) adds a layer of customer authentication to card payments, and is the mechanism that delivers [Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)](https://monei.com/blog/sca/) under PSD2. It helps reduce fraud and shifts chargeback liability for fraudulent transactions away from the merchant.

Transactions **without** 3D Secure authentication or SCA are more prone to [chargebacks](https://docs.monei.com/fraud-prevention/chargebacks/.md) — and you assume the risk for the full amount of any payment that results in a chargeback, regardless of the transaction value.

## 3D Secure exemptions[](#settings "Direct link to 3D Secure exemptions")

By default, MONEI applies 3D Secure (SCA) to card payments. MONEI does support exemptions that skip 3D Secure for low-value payments (below €30) to reduce checkout friction.

You can't enable an exemption yourself — to request one, [contact our support team](https://support.monei.com/hc/requests/new). Whether it can be applied is decided case by case, based on several risk factors, your merchant category, and your acquiring bank.

warning

Transactions without 3D Secure authentication or SCA are more prone to chargebacks. You assume the risk for the full amount of any payment that results in a chargeback, regardless of the transaction value. The issuing bank will return the money to the cardholder.
