# Bancontact

Bancontact is Belgium's most popular local payment method, connected to 20 of the country's banks. Almost every Belgian bank account comes with a Bancontact debit card, so accepting it lets you reach Belgian shoppers who don't pay with international card schemes.

For consumers, a Bancontact payment works like this:

1. The customer chooses Bancontact at checkout.
2. The customer is redirected to Bancontact to confirm the payment with their bank or the Bancontact app.
3. The customer authorizes the payment.
4. The customer returns to your site and the payment is confirmed.

## Availability[](#availability "Direct link to Availability")

Bancontact is a local payment method in Belgium. Only customers making purchases from Belgium can use it, but by integrating with MONEI you can accept it regardless of where you operate your business. Bancontact payments are in euros.

For the current list of countries where MONEI is available to merchants, see [what countries MONEI supports](https://docs.monei.com/onboarding/onboarding-by-country/.md#availability).

## Activation[](#activation "Direct link to Activation")

If you haven't already signed up for MONEI's payment services, [register here](https://dashboard.monei.com/signup).

Once you've created your account and it has been approved, go to [MONEI Dashboard → Settings → Payment Methods](https://dashboard.monei.com/settings/payment-methods), find Bancontact, and enable it.

After you activate Bancontact, it becomes available in the [Hosted Payment Page](https://docs.monei.com/integrations/use-prebuilt-payment-page/.md) integration. Because Bancontact is a Belgian local payment method, the Bancontact payment button only appears when customers located in Belgium reach your payment page.

note

With [payments orchestration](https://docs.monei.com/payments/orchestration/.md), you can configure routing rules for Bancontact payments. Bancontact will then only appear on your payment page when a transaction matches the specified rules.

## Fees[](#fees "Direct link to Fees")

Bancontact payments are charged a flat **1.40% + €0.24** per successful transaction. For current pricing, see [MONEI fees](https://docs.monei.com/manage-account/monei-fees/.md).

This is an **all-in rate**: **€0.22** is an acquiring fee charged by the payment processor and deducted directly from your settlements, and **1.40% + €0.02** is MONEI's commission billed on your weekly invoice. A **€0.24** fee per refund is likewise deducted from your settlements, not billed by MONEI.

A one-time **€10** setup fee (VAT-exempt) also applies the first time you use Bancontact — charged by the payment processor and deducted from your first settlement.

## Payouts[](#payouts "Direct link to Payouts")

Bancontact transactions are settled into the IBAN connected to your MONEI account. [Settlement times vary](https://docs.monei.com/manage-account/payouts-and-settlements/.md) depending on your account status, but generally range from one to seven days after the payment has been successfully processed.

## Refunds[](#refunds "Direct link to Refunds")

You can issue full or partial refunds on Bancontact payments from the [MONEI Dashboard](https://dashboard.monei.com/payments) or the [API](https://docs.monei.com/apis/rest/payments-refund/.md). Each refund is charged a flat **€0.24** acquiring fee, deducted from your settlements — MONEI never charges a fee to issue a refund.

## Integration[](#integration "Direct link to Integration")

Bancontact is available through the [Hosted Payment Page](https://docs.monei.com/integrations/use-prebuilt-payment-page/.md). No extra configuration is needed: once Bancontact is activated on your account, the Bancontact button appears on the Hosted Payment Page for customers located in Belgium.
